Secondary School

At St Mary's School Robinvale, we offer a distinctive educational experience by providing secondary education for Years 7 and 8, a unique feature within our Diocese. Our curriculum is designed to foster holistic development, ensuring students are well-prepared for future academic pursuits and personal growth.

Curriculum Overview

In Years 7 and 8, students engage in a comprehensive curriculum that includes core subjects such as Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Languages, and Physical Education. Additionally, students have the opportunity to explore a variety of electives, including Food Technology, Drama, Textiles, Dance, Art, Design and Technology, and Digital Technologies. This diverse curriculum allows students to discover and develop their interests and talents.

STEM and Science

We place a strong emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in Years 7 and 8. Our annual Science Fair, held during Science Week, provides students with the opportunity to engage in hands-on projects and showcase their scientific inquiries, fostering a passion for discovery and innovation.

Student Leadership Team

At St Mary’s we are dedicated to developing leadership qualities within our students. We focus on empowering our students to become confident, compassionate, and responsible leaders who embody the school’s Mercy Values of Respect, Courage, Compassion, Justice, Hospitality, and Service. We feel this is  integral to the development of future ready leaders who play a pivotal part in shaping a vibrant, inclusive, and Christian value driven school culture. Each year our secondary students are asked to nominate themselves for a Student leadership Team position. Once nominated the students go through a rigorous selection process including preparing and delivering speeches in front of their peers and participating in an interview with the Principal. Our Student Leadership Team comprises School Captains, a Catholic Social Justice Team, and Class Captains from Years 5 to 8. The team meets regularly under the guidance of the Deputy Principal and they contribute meaningfully to the school community in a number of ways including:

  • Preparing and presenting the school weekly assembly

  • Assisting at all school events

  • Initiating and leading Catholic Justice initiatives and fundraisers

  • Representing the voice of and advocating for the wider student cohort

  • Representing the school at community events.

Buddy Program

Our Year 8 Buddy Program pairs Year 8 students with Prep students, promoting mentorship and a sense of responsibility among our older students. The Buddy Program is designed to create meaningful connections between older and younger students, providing benefits for both age groups. Year 8 students take on a mentorship role, offering guidance and support to their younger peers, while Prep students gain a sense of security and belonging within the school community.

Benefits for Students

For Year 8 Students:

  • Development of leadership and responsibility

  • Enhanced communication and interpersonal skills

  • A sense of accomplishment in contributing positively to the school community.

For Prep Students:

  • Increased confidence and comfort in the school environment

  • Improved social skills through regular interaction with older peers

  • Exposure to positive role models.

Activities and Interactions

Throughout the year, buddy pairs engage in various collaborative activities, including:

  • Reading Sessions: Older students read to their younger buddies, fostering a love for literature and improving literacy skills.

  • Art and Craft Projects: Collaborative creative projects that encourage teamwork and creativity.

  • Outdoor Active Play: Shared recreational time to promote physical activity and strengthen bonds.

These interactions are designed to be enjoyable and educational, reinforcing the values of empathy, respect, and cooperation.

Our Buddy Program not only enhances the individual experiences of participating students but also contributes to a more cohesive and supportive school culture. By bridging age groups, we cultivate an environment where students feel connected and valued, laying the foundation for a compassionate and engaged community.

Vertical Homeroom Structure

We implement a vertical homeroom system that combines Year 7 and 8 students. This approach fosters a supportive and collaborative environment, allowing students to learn from and support each other, thereby enhancing their social and academic development.

Commitment to Catholic Social Justice

Our school is dedicated to instilling the principles of Catholic Social Justice. Through various initiatives and projects, we encourage students to engage in social justice projects, promoting active community participation and a deep understanding of their role in contributing to a just, kind and caring society. The Principles of Catholic Social Justice underpin all we do as we are committed to providing an education that nurtures the spiritual, intellectual, and social development of our students, preparing them to be compassionate and informed members of society.
